Historic school receives prestigious environmental certification
Connaught School |
From the Calgary Board of Education website:
“Historic Connaught School, the oldest operating school in Calgary, has received a prestigious environmental certification.
…Connaught School underwent a major renovation in 2008-09. As part of the renovation and (LEEDS) certification, Connaught teachers and the CBE EcoTeam created a series of educational resources focused on using the environmental features of the school as teaching tools. These were connected to the program of studies learning outcomes for Grades 1-6. This resulted in the creation of numerous videos for student use and community education. In addition, the school undertook the creation of naturalization area that has engaged the local community.”

Action Planning This Sunday
Join the Action Plan to save our beautiful heritage school. Last week, citizens gathered and spent some time sorting out how to proceed. We now have four action groups that have already started doing things:
- Lobby Action (letters and meetings with politicians)
- Citizen Action (public events and campaigns)
- 2nd Opinion Action (gaining expert advice on the building)
- Legal Action (exploring our legal rights)
At this Sunday’s meeting each group will report back on the week’s activities, and invite new input, ideas and members. Get involved. There’s room for everyone!

Write a letter – here’s some ideas
The Regina Board of Education has forwarded a request to accept replacement of Connaught in this provincial budget cycle. The group Save Our Connaught wants to flood Premier Brad Wall with letters in advance of the March 20 provincial budget.
Here’s his address and suggested points to include – pick and choose what means the most to you, or indulge them all! We’ve uploaded it as a Word document, so that you can cut and paste.

New organization seeks second opinion
March 4, 2012. Regina – A second opinion by qualified heritage building experts is item number one for a new community organization formed Sunday.
The group “Save Our Connaught” was created at a meeting attended by school parents, Cathedral Area residents and heritage supporters, who gathered at the Cathedral Neighbourhood Centre on Sunday.
“We’re determined to do the homework that has been left undone,” said Suzanne Arndt, whose daughter attends the school. Read the full post »
